Australia needs to take a 'tough line' on refugee policies
Australia will face serious issues if the Morrison government does not maintain its tough stance on border policies, says former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy. It comes after the Tamil family was evacuated from Christmas Island to Perth for their daughter’s urgent medical care. Mr Conroy said letting the family stay in Australia may open up floodgates for other illegal immigrants which will lead to the government “spending more on refugee policies” than other important matters. “I've looked at the billions and billions of dollars just to house, feed, and to go through the necessary security procedures," he said. He said the US has a “serious problem on the southern border” and Australia will face the same problem “if we don’t take a tough line on this issue”. “What we need to see is a properly managed refugee process."
