Joel Fitzgibbon calls for leadership rule change
Joel Fitzgibbon has told Sky News he will run as a Labor candidate at the next federal election. That's despite threatening to quit the party following Labor's poor result in the Upper Hunter by-election. “I’ve been doing my fundraising and working the electorate hard,” Mr Fitzgibbon said. “The reality is I might be stuck there regardless because most people are saying Hunter is under pressure, the prime minister is going after it and I might be the only one who is capable of hanging on.” The Labor MP spoke with Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell where he said it’s time for Labor to dump the Rudd-leadership vote rules which requires 60 per cent of caucus signatures in opposition to bring on a spill. The system also involves the 50 per cent participation of the branch membership in the vote. Mr Fitzgibbon also told Sky News the Upper Hunter by-election result had "significant" federal implications, and denied he is hurting the party with his public comments.
