Barilaro calls on Turnbull to quit the Liberals
NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro has sensationally called on former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to quit the Liberal Party after he donated to an independent candidate’s by-election campaign. The Upper Hunter by-election scheduled for May 22 is a must-win for the NSW Coalition which will be plunged further into a minority government if it loses the tightly contested seat. Mr Turnbull and his wife donated $6,000 total to fund Independent Kirsty O’Connell’s campaign in a move which was met with harsh criticism from Coalition colleagues. Speaking to the press this morning Mr Barilaro said Mr Turnbull should resign if he wouldn't support a Coalition government. “If the Liberal Party don’t want to sack him, well be honourable and resign,” he said. “If you’re not going to support a Coalition government, you’re not going to support what I believe is the best premier in the country in Gladys Berejiklian.” The NSW Deputy Premier previously labelled Mr Turnbull’s decision to back Ms O’Connell “an act of treachery”. “He’s a wrecker, he’s a destroyer, he doesn’t build, and he wants to lecture people in the regions,” Mr Barilaro said after he first learned of Mr Turnbull’s decision to back a Coalition opponent.
