Treasury and the Morrison government desperately wants to drive the unemployment rate below five per cent as it attempts to strengthen the budget bottom line. The Morrison government is expected to unveil numerous measures in the upcoming May 11 budget to drive unemployment down. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told Sky News lowering the unemployment rate will “help strengthen” the budget. “When you get more people in employment, you have a lower welfare bill and you also have more tax revenue coming in from those workers,” he said.
