Queensland lockdown will ‘dent confidence’ for tourists: Liberal MP
Queensland’s COVID lockdown will “dent some confidence” for the one-in-seven Australians planning to travel to the sunshine state over the Easter holidays, says Liberal MP Julian Simmonds. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced on Monday the state will be plunged into a three-day lockdown as of 5PM tonight. It comes after research from Tourism and Events Queensland showed one-in-seven Australians were planning to travel to Queensland’s many holiday destinations over Easter injecting $1 billion into the economy. Mr Simmonds said the projected cash injection projected would be “so needed” for the tourism and hospitality industries in Queensland as providers seek to recover from lost earnings in 2020. “The lockdown, regardless if it only lasts for 3 days or longer, is going to dent some confidence for those Easter holidays so I hope this is what we need to get on top of these cases,” he said.
