PM announces new $1bn long-range missile capability investment to ‘defend interests’
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the federal government’s investment in a new sovereign guided weapon enterprise will ensure Australia’s capability to “defend Australia’s interests”. The prime minister is in South Australia to announce the Commonwealth government’s new Defence Industry Roadmap which includes the $1 billion investment into long-range missile capabilities. The government expects the new weapons facility could provide $4 billion in domestic and export-based revenue. “This is a billion-dollar initiative to bring this forward to ensure that we have what we need to do what’s right for all Australians,” Mr Morrison said. The prime minister said the Commonwealth has been working closely with the nation’s defence industry and has “recovered, rebuilt, and restored” defence investment. “To keep Australians safe, to ensure that Australians can stand up for our interests, to stand up for our part of the world, to stand up for liberal democracy and the freedom that so many before us paid the ultimate price us to enjoy,” he said.
