Health Minister’s ‘foresight’ means Australia doesn’t need to wait for overseas vaccines
Health Minister Greg Hunt had the “foresight” to make sure Australia secured sovereign supply of the COVID vaccines so the nation no longer needs to wait for supply from Europe, according to Liberal MP Dr Katie Allen. Victorian-based CSL last week announced the Therapeutic Goods Association approved its locally manufactured AstraZeneca vaccine for distribution. The CSL-made vaccine will bolster Australia’s vaccine supply as 800,000 doses to be put in circulation every week. Dr Allen told Sky News the vaccine rollout takes COVID-19 from being “a deadly disease to a serious disease” which will keep Australia’s aged care sector and the most vulnerable safe. She said the health minister’s “foresight” to allow domestic production of the AstraZeneca vaccine has meant the Australian government “no longer needs to wait” for overseas supplies given the current blockade coming from Europe.
