'Build back better': Albanese unveils Labor's $15 billion construction fund
Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has unveiled the ALP’s national construction fund which seeks to use the coronavirus crisis to “build back better” and achieve a greener, low emissions future for Australia. The $15 billion pledge will also include a scheme to restart the car manufacturing industry in Australia to avoid a showdown with the unions over Labor's support for free trade. Mr Albanese said the coronavirus pandemic had brought into focus both strengths and weaknesses in Australian society and the national economy. He pointed out “there’s a whole range of products that we’re simply not producing” and said Labor’s plan would seek to revive Australia’s capacity to manufacture products needed to improve the defence, medical and transport sectors. “It will apply to sectors across the board such as the defence industry, such as existing businesses that need to transition towards zero net emissions,” he said. The opposition leader said “secure jobs, permanent jobs and well-paid jobs” were central to his party’s policy platform.
