Dob-in hotline for JobSeeker rorters 'responds to a real economic issue'
Labor MP Patrick Gorman has warned a ‘form of modern slavery” could develop if people on welfare are not be able to be selective in their employment decisions. His comment responded to the Morrison government’s provision of a dob-in hotline which will allow employers to report JobSeeker recipients who turn down offers for work. “It does seem like an incredibly punitive approach,” he said when questioned on the topic. “Do you want to go back to some form of modern slavery where people have to take a job regardless of the terms and conditions of that job?” Liberal MP Jason Falinski said “you only have to walk into a restaurant these days and they will say to you look I can only open for dinner because I can’t get anyone to work during lunch”. “We’ve got farmers saying they can’t get people to pick fruit, we’ve got cafés saying they can’t get anyone to serve tables, we’ve got restaurants saying they can’t open because they can’t get anyone in the kitchen”.
