China can 'chokehold' rare earths supply
Former Pentagon advisor Jason Israel says President Joe Biden’s 100 day review of supply chains will be “of significance to Australia” because it will look at rare earths. “So, China has the vast amount of both rare earth processing capabilities and mining in its country and it can really chokehold rare earths. The 17 minerals that are used in all kinds of technology worldwide,” he said. “An iPhone has eight rare earths, an F-35 fighter jet in the US has about 400 kilograms of different rare earths inside so the fact that China holds those is very interesting “Australia has the sixth largest reserves so it’s very interested in how it could become more of a player.”
