PM outlines critical changes to aged care, mental health and Indigenous support
The 2020-2021 financial year will see the Morrison government deliver critical changes to important services including aged care, mental health and closing the gap initiatives for Indigenous communities. The prime minister highlighted his commitment to guaranteeing Australians essential services during his address to the National Press Club ahead of the first parliamentary sitting week. “This year's budget we will deliver the government's response to the Aged Care Royal Commission's final report,” Mr Morrison said. “The key focus of our response to the final report will be growing and upskilling the aged care workforce." The prime minister also touted his “strengthened” commitment to addressing the issue of mental health in the Australian community, a problem which he acknowledged had been exacerbated by the coronavirus. “This year, there will be a new national agreement on mental health and suicide prevention”. After setting up a landmark new national agreement on ‘Closing the Gap’ Mr Morrison said 2021 would see further implementation plans actioned. He concluded by saying, “to protect and secure Australians' interests has always been a core, if not the most important objective and responsibility of the federal government.”
