Perth's lockdown receives bipartisan support
Premier Mark McGowan’s decision to plunge Perth and its surrounding regions into a hard five-day lockdown has received bipartisan support, with the Liberal Party pausing its election campaign for the duration of the lockdown. The state’s new Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup came out in support of the decision – also revealing via Twitter the “abuse” directed at his party for their position. He stood firm on the decision, however, saying the lockdown, “isn’t up for debate. The medical advice is that we need to go into lockdown to save lives”. “I will never apologise for protecting the health and safety of West Aussies.” The state election is scheduled for March 13. Meanwhile, concerns have mounted among health authorities Western Australia’s caseload will rise as the security guard at the centre of the feared outbreak visited multiple sites before returning a positive test. AMA President Omar Khorshid today told Sky News “if this chap has been infectious while he’s been out and about there could already be a very large number of cases”. “If this is the UK variant it could get away from authorities really quickly,” he warned.
