Palaszczuk lashes out at Frydenberg for 'name calling'
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has hit back at Treasurer Josh Frydenberg for “name calling” after he suggested Queensland dip into its own budget to support the state's struggling tourism operators. The treasurer this morning told Sky News the Morrison government has done the “bulk of heavy lifting” in providing economic support for struggling businesses – particularly the tourism industry – throughout the pandemic. His comments come after Ms Palaszczuk appealed to the federal government to extend JobKeeper payments for those struggling operators on the back of announcing Queensland’s border will reopen to Greater Sydney after slamming shut just days before Christmas. Asked about Mr Frydenberg's comments today, the Queensland premier said “I’ve been up there listening to the operators personally, nearly every single operator raised this issue with me”. “Perhaps rather than Josh Frydenberg name calling perhaps he could go up there and listen first hand as well. “I am merely communicating what people are saying to me, they are concerned that they are going to fall off a cliff. The premier was further probed about a story published this morning in the Daily Telegraph in which NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet criticised the Queensland government for closing their borders and wanting “the taxpayers of NSW to pay for that decision”. “Well they can call me whatever names they want right, but honestly I will always stand up for people in this state,” Ms Palaszczuk responded. “I sat around with tourism operators, they are hurting ok, so I will always stand up for what is right and what I believe to be right and we will just let NSW be NSW.
