New shadow climate and energy minister pressed on 2030 targets
New shadow climate and energy minister Chris Bowen is refusing to outline the party's medium-term emissions reduction goals, after a major shadow cabinet reshuffle reignited tensions over climate policy. Labor Leader Anthony Albanese on Thursday bowed to pressure from the right flank of his party and moved close left factional ally Mark Butler out of his climate change portfolio, where he spent seven years prosecuting the case for ambitious climate action. Mr Albanese gave the role instead to Chris Bowen, a member of the influential NSW right faction and a former treasurer and shadow treasurer, who's promised to bring a sharper economic perspective to the issue. When pressed by Sky News host Kieran Gilbert this morning, Mr Bowen refused to say if Labor had a plan for a 2030 target. “Of course, we need to and will outline our pathway to net zero by 2050 but targets are just part of that conversation, I think it’s easy to get caught up in the 'targets good or bad' conversation,” he said.
