Waverley Council closes parks for Sydney NYE fireworks despite NSW government advice
Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos says her council does not feel confident it could manage the influx of revellers flocking to parks to enjoy views of New Year's Eve fireworks, instead opting to close, fence, and police vantage points across Sydney's East. Ms Masselos said the decision was made four weeks ago when her council felt a safe environment could not be ensured, despite New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian suggesting residents could freely attend parks. "We're not confident we're actually going to be able to control the numbers," she said. "We've decided we will be closing those parks. We have been working closely through this with the police, the Department of Transport and the Department of Health throughout the pandemic."
