Top space stories of 2020: Iron rain, ‘hungriest’ black hole, digging for asteroids
Australian National University astrophysicist and cosmologist Brad Tucker has capped off 2020 with his top 10 space stories of the year. If you thought 2020 was a massive year full of twists and turns on Earth, it was also extraordinary in outer space. Dr Tucker told Sky News his top three included the discovery of phosphine on Venus, which could have been a sign of alien life, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon launch with humans, which marked the first non-country to shoot people off-planet, and his top story was Japan’s recovery of samples from the asteroid Ryugu, which landed in the desert of South Australia. “We landed on an asteroid in 2018 and 2019, dug it up and safely returned it to back to South Australia in 2020,” Dr Tucker said. “That’s a huge, remarkable achievement.”
