Pompeii snack-bar contents to give historians look into 'classic, everyday experience'
The discovery of a largely intact snack bar in Pompeii will give historians a well-informed look into everyday life in Ancient Italy, says Macquarie University Professor of Ancient History Ray Laurence. Archaeologists have discovered an alfresco hot food and drinks shop buried in the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii. Traces of nearly 2,000-year-old food have been found in deep terracotta jars, once used at the street food stand. Mr Laurence told Sky News the contents of the jars have been sent away to labs for testing. “They will throw at it every type of archaeo-botany you can do, they will re-analyse all the residues so we do get a complete picture of what was actually in those jars,” he said. “That’s been a mystery for us ever since Pompeii was discovered 250 years ago. "That’s a real classic everyday experience.”
