NSW volunteer firefighter reflects on Australia's devastating black summer bushfires
Former acting commissioner and NSW volunteer firefighter Jim Smith reflects on his involvement in fighting Australia’s devastating bushfires over the summer of 2019 and 2020. It’s been one year since the bushfires tore across the nations and while towns are slowly recovering, for many, the trauma remains. “New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (of 2020) were such long days,” Mr Smith said. “The fires were raging all around us. “We were working so hard to try and protect it. “You couldn’t see the sun even though it might have been a sunny day, all you could see was smoke.” “The spread of the fires was just dreadful; it was so quick.” “It was just unbelievable.”
