NSW premier flags relief plan for Northern Beaches businesses
New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she is not considering imposing stay-at-home orders for Greater Sydney at this point in time – despite flagging the coronavirus threat to the area is almost equal to that of the Northern Beaches. “We won’t impose anything on our citizens unless we absolutely have to, so we’re not there yet,” she said. “But the higher rates of testing will give us greater confidence not to have to consider anything further for Greater Sydney.” The premier was also probed as to whether the NSW government was planning on providing relief for businesses on the Northern Beaches who were seeing significant downturns in trade due to the lockdowns. “What we’re looking at is similar to what has already been provided to businesses across the state,” Ms Berejiklian responded. She said they anticipated relief would be provided on January 3, “so there’s only a few days to hang out”. “We’re just asking businesses to appreciate that we’re thinking of them, that we’re considering the best way to support them an that there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel,” she said.
