JobSeeker supplement 'really is a lifeline'
Australian Council of Social Service CEO Dr Cassandra Goldie says there needs to be income support to help people whilst they try to get more paid work. From Friday the JobSeeker supplement will be slashed by $100 a fortnight, and Jobkeeper by $200 from Monday. The new rates are effective until the end of March. "JobSeeker is the unemployment payment, it needs to be permanently fixed," Dr Goldie told Sky News. She said it is important that JobKeeper is carefully "phased down". "We are one of those saying that we need to keep that rate where it is at the moment," Dr Goldie said. "That is a wage subsidy though, and eventually we do need to transition away from that, we understand that". "The JobSeeker needs to be permanently fixed". "These are dollars that have really helped to keep the economy going". "If you're unemployed, it's going to be really bleak in just a couple of days when you're plunged down again further below the poverty line". Dr Goldie said there should be a "permanent and adequate increase to Jobseeker" as it "really is a lifeline".
