Inner West Council mayor urges people to stay away from harbourside parks on NYE
Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne has pleaded with residents to stay away from harbourside parks this New Year’s Eve to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. “To be blunt, the government’s been a bit complacent in regards to New Year’s Eve,” he told Sky News. “I’ve been writing to them and ringing their offices for weeks now saying there are real concerns about an outbreak. “We’ve declared all of our parks closed, but it will be the responsibility of the NSW Police to move people on, and that’s why we need the cooperation of the community. “Please don’t go to harbourside parks to watch the fireworks, there’s no good reason to be there, and if we do see that happen then we risk the last day of 2020 being the worst day of 2020.” Mr Byrne said the community has done an “awesome” job throughout 2020 adhering to government advice and encouraged the “same sense of responsibility” to continue. “The worst thing we could possibly do, having carried the football all the way down the field throughout the year, is to get complacent now and knock-on just when the danger of the virus is at its highest,” he said.
