COVID-19 'may not necessarily be the big one': WHO issues global health warning
The World Health Organisation has issued a grim warning in its final press conference for the year – telling global nations to prepare for a greater threat than the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO Health Emergencies Programme Dr Michael Ryan warned the far-reaching coronavirus pandemic “is not necessarily the big one”. “This virus is very transmissible, and it kills people … but its current case fatality is reasonably low in comparison to other emerging diseases,” he said. “This is a wakeup call, if there’s one thing we need to take from this pandemic, with all of the tragedy and loss, is that we need to get our act together, we need to get ready for something even more severe in the future.” Mr Ryan also urged people to remain vigilant against the virus – despite a vaccine being rolled out across much of the world. “The existence of a vaccine, even at high efficacy, there’s no guarantee of eliminating or eradicating an infectious disease, that is a very high bar for us to get over,” he said.
