Berejiklian urges premiers to act 'compassionately' in regard to border closures
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is urging state premiers to carefully consider the decisions surrounding border closures and to act compassionately. State premiers around Australia were fast to impose restrictions on residents from Greater Sydney following the recent outbreak of COVID-19 on the Northern Beaches. The restrictions threw the plans of families and businesses into disarray during the busy festive period. “I think people have already suffered enough regarding Christmas and New Year's in terms of not being able to reunite with families, and the feedback we're getting from tourism operators in all states is that everybody is suffering in terms of jobs and economy,” Ms Berejiklian said. “They are all issues we need to turn our attention to. “The New South Wales government would prefer open borders throughout Australia for the duration of the pandemic, that has always been our position.”
