Anthem adjustment not a radical move: PM
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says changing the lyrics of the national anthem from “young and free” to “one and free” is not a radical change as he seeks to assuage concerns from conservatives who are against the alternation. Australia will begin the New Year with a change to the national anthem after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the second line of Advance Australia Fair will be changed from Friday January 1. The line "for we are young and free" will be replaced by "one and free", in an attempt to recognise Indigenous history. In his first address of 2021, Mr Morrison said the change is for "all Australians." "It’s a message that appears pitched at some conservatives who may be uneasy about the change," he said. "It’s a change for all Australians, and I’ve already been encouraged by the strong response from Australians right across the country, Indigenous, not Indigenous, people of all different backgrounds, people of all different political views. "I think that it very much sits in the mainstream of where Australia would like us to go and I think it’s a great way to start the New Year.”
