Labor frontbencher denounces 'horrific and appalling' Chinese Twitter attack on ADF
Labor frontbencher Tony Burke has denounced images published to Twitter by China of an Australian soldier holding a knife to the throat of a child as “horrific and appalling”. The images – which not been censored by Twitter despite being faked – were published by China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian who said he was “shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers”. Speaking at a press conference, Mr Burke said “the most important message that needs to be said immediately to every Australian is for all the reports that are out there at the moment about the behaviour of a few, Australia stands proud and continues to have its trust in our armed forces”. “Everybody who wears the uniform needs to know that Australians stand with them and this parliament stands with them”. “Some people are wanting to use the fact that Australia has been upfront with an open inquiry process where the defence force and the defence chiefs have been transparent with Australia and with the world”. Mr Burke said Australians must not allow the conduct of a few to tarnish the reputation of the many soldiers who keep the nation safe.
