Fake Chinese tweet is an ‘insult to Australians’: Labor MP
A doctored tweet by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson which shows an Australian soldier holding a knife to the throat of a child is “one of the most provocative things another nation could do,” according to Liberal MP Trent Zimmerman. The images – which not been censored by Twitter despite being faked – were published by China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian who said he was “shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers”. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has hit out at the Chinese government for the tweet and has demanded an apology for what he described as a “falsified” and “repugnant” post. Mr Zimmerman echoed the prime minister’s sentiments and told Sky News the tweet was “reprehensible”. “It’s extraordinary that this has come from an official Chinese foreign affairs spokesperson,” Mr Zimmerman said. “It is one of the most provocative things that another nation could do, and really and truly I just have no words to describe how angry Australians would be”. Labor MP Peter Khalil said the Chinese government “crossed the line” in terms of normal diplomatic relations and said the tweet was “disgusting” and an “insult to Australians”.
