Anthony Albanese condemns ‘inflammatory and deeply offensive’ Chinese tweet
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has joined with Prime Minister Scott Morrison in condemning a doctored tweet by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson which shows an Australian soldier holding a knife to a child's throat. Mr Albanese told parliament the tweet was “gratuitous, inflammatory, and deeply offensive”. “I join with the Prime Minister in his condemn nation of the tweet directed at the men and women of the Australian Defence Force that was published earlier today,” the opposition leader said. “Australia's condemnation of this image is above politics and we all stand as a nation in condemning it.” The images – which have not been censored by Twitter despite being faked – were published by China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian who said he was “shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers”. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has hit out at the Chinese government for the tweet and has demanded an apology for what he described as a “falsified” and “repugnant” post.
