Polls open for Queensland’s 2020 election
Polling booths are officially open in Queensland where voters will have their say between returning Labor to government or planting the LNP in power – both of which are offering a suite of different policies. Labor has promised to build a second M1, introduce legislation to legalise euthanasia, no new taxes, employ almost 10,000 frontline healthcare workers, and hire more than 2,000 more police by 2025. The LNP meanwhile has offered a controversial youth curfew plan for Townsville and Cairns, construction of the drought-busting New Bradfield Scheme, a $300 rebate for every registered vehicle owner, fast-tracked surgeries, a second M1 and an expansion of the Bruce Highway. The latest Newspoll shows Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is on track to secure a third consecutive term for Labor. Ms Palaszczuk came under fire after reports emerged Friday that she consulted polling on the popularity of borders before announcing Queensland would be opening to NSW except for Greater Sydney from November 3. “That polling clearly shows that the premier of Queensland is using this as a political weapon, and that’s exactly what has happened, and it is shocking and it is a disgrace that the premier has misled Queenslanders,” Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington said. "That research that has been plastered around this afternoon is completely false, it was never given to state government, and that is an LNP smear campaign at the 11th hour,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
