PM appoints two new High Court Justices
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has held a press conference with the Attorney General to announce the appointment of NSW Judge Jacqueline Gleeson and Melbourne Jurist Simon Steward as Justices to the High Court of Australia. The two new Justices will fill the vacancies left by two retiring Justices currently on the High Court. Mr Morrison said the government underwent an “exhaustive” process before making the final appointments. “Every Justice appointed to the High Court carries a significant burden to uphold the laws of our land.” Speaking after the prime minister, Attorney-General Christian Porter said both Justices had “impeccable records” and the skillset needed for the High Court. “I and the cabinet are incredibly confident that Justice Stewart and Justice Gleeson will make very useful additions to the High Court bench”. “They are outstanding judges, they have been outstanding barristers, they are outstanding members of the legal and broader Australian community.
