‘Deadly, dangerous and culturally sensitive’: Western Highway upgrade giving Andrews grief
Premier Daniel Andrews says “there is a balance to be struck” around upgrades to Victoria’s Western Highway. The Western Highway is the major road linking Melbourne and Adelaide and a $672 million investment into upgrades is expected to benefit farmers, tourists and manufacturing services in the region. However, negotiations concerning cultural heritage issues resulted in the Andrews government agreeing to move the road, changing its intended route. "We need to find that balance point between respecting fundamentally cultural heritage but also getting things done," Mr Andrews said. “In recent years we have had 12 people lose their life on that road. It is deadly, it is dangerous, it has to be improved and upgraded, that is exactly what I will get done. “I do acknowledge these are sensitive and emotional issues for many, and I don't expect everybody to agree, but can't sit here waiting while that road remains deadly. "I cannot sit here waiting for 100% agreement. If I did that, we would never get anything done ever."
