Voters unimpressed with both candidates: Annelise Nielsen in Cleveland, Ohio
Watching the Presidential debate at a Republican event on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio, it was hard to hear the candidates over the cheers and groans of the audience. On the streets of Cleveland the next day though, the message was loud and clear: everyone was very unimpressed. Keeping two such diametrically opposed people on track was always going to be a challenge, but when one’s entire schtick is ignoring the rules it was always an impossible task. Supporters from both sides told me the same, and no one had heard anything that’d make them change their mind. But the most telling voter I spoke to was a young woman in her late twenties who didn’t identify herself with any minority groups. She only tuned in for half an hour of the debate. She wanted to vote, but still didn’t know that she would, saying, “I wasn’t impressed but those are our options so I just don’t know.” If the Democrats can’t pick up voters like her, in the midst of protests and a pandemic, the path to victory is narrow indeed.
