Victoria could become 'trapped in a cycle of closures and re-closures': Hunt
Health Minister Greg Hunt says there are concerns among federal authorities Victoria's coronavirus approach is an eradication strategy. Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday rejected suggestions he was pursuing an eradication strategy, however, under the plan he said 14 days of zero new cases would be required to reach a COVID normal. “The prime minister, the treasurer and myself respectfully asked Victoria to review those thresholds,” Mr Hunt told Sky News. “The epidemiologists … have all indicated that they are concerned that those thresholds may mean an inadvertent lockdown which would mean that small businesses, restaurants, and cafes could be almost permanently trapped in a cycle of closure or re-closures. “Cases can come and cases will come unless we lock ourselves off from all imports, all returning travellers … then you can never eliminate the risk, but we can manage it. “We just need to look at the rest of Australia and the way that’s been done and that provides the model for Victoria. “Really strong contact tracing and testing is what’s going to protect us .”
