Union 'attempting to hold the economy to ransom' in wharf workers pay dispute
Wharf workers staging a go-slow campaign at a major Sydney port are being accused of "holding the economy to ransom" as tens of thousands of shipping containers containing critical supplies await unloading off the New South Wales coast. The federal government has vowed to intervene, describing the pay standoff as a “slap in the face” to out of work Australians with some wharf workers pocketing up to $172,000 per year. Workers at Patrick's Terminal have called for a six per cent annual pay rise each year over the next four years. However, Chief Executive Michael Jovicic has told Sky News the demands are unreasonable and is seeking an urgent hearing at the Fair Work Commission to resolve the issue. The Industrial relations minister Christian Porter has released a statement saying, “for a union to be attempting to hold the national economy to ransom is simply unforgivable”. “I can confirm that the government will intervene in support of Patrick Terminals' application to the Fair Work Commission. It is vital that we see a quick resolution to this dispute.”
