President Trump rejects reports he paid just over $1,000 in tax in 2016
US President Donald Trump has hit back at claims he's avoided paying income tax for 10 years, insisting he has "paid many millions of dollars in taxes”. A report by the New York Times revealed he paid just over $1,000 in taxes during 2016, the year he was elected. He reportedly claimed hundreds of millions of dollars in debt to lower his bill. In a tweet, the President said “I paid many millions of dollars in taxes but was entitled, like everyone else, to depreciation & tax credits. Also, if you look at the extraordinary assets owned by me, I am extremely under-leveraged". Mr Trump has been vowing to publish his tax returns since 2016, but has never followed through.
