'COVID normal Christmas': Andrews calls for optimism for October 19 reopening
Premier Daniel Andrews has called for optimism as the slated October 19 reopening date nears, pointing to the possibility of "a COVID normal Christmas" and summer. Victoria recorded 15 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths overnight, bringing the state's death toll to 800. Mr Andrews said he wanted the virus to be at "such a low level" it could be sustained "over the long term" for the majority or the entirety of 2021. "I think the vast majority of Victorians are determined to have a very different 2021 compared to 2020," he said. "That is all about making sure we get these numbers low, opening up steady, safe and keeping these numbers low. "We haven't got the luxury of pretending we want this to be over. You can't. It's got to be defeated properly." Mr Andrews said once the health challenge was dealt with, Victoria could "then pivot to economic repair". Victoria has 289 active cases.
