COVID elimination strategy to cost Australian economy $319b
Institute of Public Affairs Associate Asher Judah says it's pretty clear Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews "has had an eradication strategy" as all the lockdown measures are designed to eliminate the virus at any cost. Recent IPA modelling has revealed the elimination strategy could cost the economy $319 billion, equivalent to 23 per cent of the nation's GDP. Mr Judah, who worked on the report, said "it's shocking, it's shocking". "It just brings home the cost of this response to the Victorian and Australian communities and what it's going to mean long-term for our country going forwards". Mr Judah said what's clear from the evidence overseas, and from the experience in Australia is that "elimination is not possible". "It can't be achieved without a vaccine and it can't be achieved with rising transmission levels overseas."
