Brenton Tarrant unlikely to serve sentence in Australia
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has told Sky News no final decision has yet been made as to where Brenton Tarrant will serve his unprecedented sentence but early indications point to New Zealand. The Australian terrorist was sentenced to life behind bars, without parole, for murder of 51 people at two Christchurch mosques in March, 2019. Ms Ardern promised to speak to survivors and the families of victims to determine whether there was a strong desire for Tarrant to serve his sentence in an Australian or New Zealand prison. In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Ms Ardern said “I wouldn’t say that its concluded, but early suggestions are that families wish to see that sentence served here”. She flagged one major obstacle, however, which was there was no existing trans-Tasman prisoner agreement with Australia. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was open to discussion and would also be guided by the views of families and survivors.
