PM needs to sack top medical official for a gross ‘misuse of power’
Sky News host Rowan Dean says the deputy chief medical officer’s ignorant dismissal of a potential COVID-19 cure is yet another example of “bureaucratic misuse of power”. Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Nick Coatsworth on Friday claimed that “all clinicians around Australia understand that regrettably hydroxychloroquine is not effective for COVID-19”. It was said in response to attacks on Liberal MP Craig Kelly who has been questioning why the drug is banned in some states. Mr Dean said Dr Coatsworth’s assertion is “one hell of a sweeping statement” which cannot possibly be true given there is a multi-million dollar trial of the drug for COVID-19 underway in Melbourne. “By claiming all clinicians around Australia understand that hydroxychloroquine is not effective, Coatsworth has either pre-determined the outcome of the trial, which is a disgrace, or completely compromised it, which is even worse,” Mr Dean said. “How can those clinicians involved in the trial now be expected to be either impartial or feel confident about coming back with findings that might contradict Australia's deputy chief medical officer. “Coatsworth has now basically turned them and their views into pariahs.” Mr Dean said there have been many published studies in recent months and weeks claiming hydroxychloroquine is associated with substantial reductions in the death rate amongst COVID infected patients. “Yet our deputy Chief medical officer seems blithely unaware of all these studies or simply doesn't care,” he said. “We need open and honest debate and all angles need to be explored. Dr Coatsworth's conduct is a disgrace and the Morrison government should give him the flick, today.” Image: Getty
