Deputy PM pushes govt to remove border blocks on farmers
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has called on the government to pass legislation allowing farmers greater movement across borders ahead of a bumper crop season. Mr McCormack highlighted the success of the Freight Movement Code for the Domestic Border Controls which was introduced by the National Cabinet in July. “There’s been relative ease of access for truckies across the borders for a long time now," he said. The Deputy Prime Minister said Agriculture Minister David Littleproud had been working hard to develop a “cut and paste” version of the Freight Movement Code for farmers. He said the ease of access and transportation allowed the freight sector must also be made possible for the agricultural sector. “This is going to be a once in a generation harvest for our farmers," he said. "They need this harvest to fill their coffers, to repay the debt that they owe to the banks and to continue to ensure that Australia can get ahead”.
