'Stopping community transmission' the 'number one priority' of aged care sector
Leading Age Services Australia CEO Sean Rooney says “widespread community transmission” of the coronavirus throughout Victoria’s hotspots has lead to the aged care sector being inundated with infection regardless of precautions put in place. Victoria’s aged care situation continued to worsen as 804 cases were found in aged care facilities, with elderly Australians in care making up a significant portion of the state’s death toll. “What we’re seeing is what we always feared that when the social distancing measures in the wider communities were relaxed all that was doing was increasing the risk to vulnerable old Australians in care,” Mr Rooney told Sky News. “We know we can’t eradicate that risk completely and now our focus as a sector but also for all the other agencies, state government, federal government, hospitals, is clearly on protecting older Australians in care.” He said while the Royal Commissions into Aged Care would likely source solutions for long-standing issues within the sector – such as providing more staff and better renumeration for care workers – the focus at the moment was to protect the most vulnerable in those facilities. “Our focus right now should be on protecting those older Australians in care and keeping the people that care for them safe and well as well -and the number one thing we can do is stop the spread in the community,” he said.
