President, Defence Secretary state different reasons for troop withdrawal
Former Pentagon Advisor Jason Israel says it’s interesting that the US Secretary of Defence and President Donald Trump are stating different reasons for the withdrawal of troops from Germany. “Secretary (Mark) Esper stated that it was part of an overall rebalancing of our global presence and we’d be bringing some people back home,” Mr Israel told Sky News. “But President Trump made it clear he wants to pull troops out of Germany because they’re not paying their NATO fees. “NATO doesn’t have fees, they just have aims of how much percentage of GDP they should spend on defence. “Germany is sitting at about 1.3 per cent, and the goal for NATO is to get to two per cent by 2024. “Germany has already said they won’t get there but plan to by 2030 or so. “So President Trump said he will punish them by removing troops.” Almost 64,000 troops will return to the US, and 5,600 will move to other NATO countries in Europe.
