Labor to bar underfire NSW MP from entering state parliament
NSW Labor has officially suspended Shaoquett Moselmane's membership and will seek to bar him from entering parliament amid allegations a Chinese government operatives infiltrated his office. The Australian Federal Police raided Mr Moselmane's on Friday as part of an ongoing investigation headed by counter-espionage agency ASIO. It was later revealed the AFP also raided the home and Sydney business of a part-time staffer to Mr Moselmane, John Zhang. The raids come after Mr Moselmane found himself in hot water over a series of controversial comments relating to China, including praising the regime’s handling of the coronavirus crisis. NSW Labor leader Jodi McKay said the decision to suspend stop Mr Moselmane from entering parliament was not made lightly. "We have worked through the mechanism of this, as I said it is a rare mechanism in the legislative council and the legislative assembly, but we worked through it with the Clark of the legislative council to understand the practicalities of it," she told reporters on Sunday. "He will be suspended from the party, which has already happened, and we will seek to have a motion to have him suspended from the parliament. "This is a Labor issue, and it needs to be the Labor Party that fixes this issue. I would hope issues of national security are above partisan politics." She said if Mr Moselmane does not endorse Labor's motion barring him from parliament, she will ask for the government and the crossbench to support it. Image: News Corp Australia
