JobKeeper will not bring 6,000 Qantas jobs back: Joyce
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is pushing for state governments to reopen their borders in a bid to restart Australia's economy and get aircraft back in the sky. Qantas announced on Thursday it would axe 6,000 jobs on top of 15,000 workers already stood down amid the coronavirus crisis. Mr Joyce told Sky News Business Editor Ticky Fullerton he was in talks with the Prime Minister and Treasurer about future assistance for the industry. “[Scott Morrison] recognised transport and tourism are going to need help and the government, through the review of JobKeeper, are working on what that looks like," Mr Joyce said. “JobKeeper was always designed to actually support jobs that are going to come back, these 6,000 are not going to come back, it will support the 15,000 people that are stood down,” he said. “We always thought it was better for us to be honest with the 6,000 people, not lead them on, not use JobKeeper in the wrong way.” Mr Joyce said the government’s JobKeeper review would be conducted in July and Qantas would likely know the structure of any support plan by the end of the scheme. “This year should have been a year of celebration - then COVD-19 happened and everything changed, it devastated the entire aviation industry worldwide, this is the worst year in aviation’s history in 100 years,” he said.
