Hacking, infiltration reminiscent of ‘Cold War statecraft’
Liberal MP Dave Sharma has compared allegations foreign agents infiltrated the political office of NSW MP Shaoquett Moselmane to former senator Sam Dastyari after ASIO raised concerns he could be “tasked individual” of the Chinese Communist Party. “We saw former NSW senator Sam Dastyari who was seemingly changing his position and arguing against his own party’s position on issues like the South China Sea because of some influence from mainland Chinese authorities,” Mr Sharma said. “The allegation seems to be the same here with Shaoquett Moselmane, that he was basically acting as a spokesperson for Beijing in return for some sort of favour or benefit, that’s the allegation. “This is not a sort of statecraft Australia is used to seeing, certainly not at least since the end of the Cold War. “It should be a wakeup call.” His remarks come after Australian Federal Police raided the Sydney home and parliamentary offices of Mr Moselmane, who was suspended from the Labor Party after the allegations surfaced, and the home of his part-time staffer John Zhang.
