Govt defence plan 'about defending our national sovereignty'
Liberal MP Tim Wilson says the government’s new defence package is ensuring Australia and its regional allies can defend their "national sovereignty and interests". Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Wednesday a $270 billion boost to the nation’s defence capabilities. The Prime Minster said the ADF would turn its focus to the Indo-Pacific region to ensure it could competently respond to potential threats. “The interests of Australia in the Indo-Pacific is not to have one particular dominant partner or the other, it’s to make sure that every country can stand up on their own two feet, be sovereign in its own right and for that to be respected,” Mr Wilson told Sky News. When questioned on whether ailing relations with China pushed for a new defence strategy, Mr Wilson said the move was prompted by national interests. “This is actually about us and about us being able to defend our national sovereignty no matter what circumstance may come past,” he said. “By ensuring Australia can project and protect sovereignty and helping other countries to be able to do the same is the best pathway for peace and stability in the region.” Image: Getty
