Tradies will be 'building lines out the back of Centrelink' if govt doesn't step in
Shadow Housing Minister Jason Clare says the only thing tradies will be building is “longer lines out the back of Centrelink” if the government doesn’t act quickly to save the industry from "falling off a cliff". The Housing Industry Association estimated some 500,000 jobs stand to be lost amid the coronavirus crisis and forecast new home construction down by 30 per cent. Mr Clare said it was clear the government was not working hard to assist the industry expected to be hardest hit following the conclusion of the JobKeeper program in September. "The government has been moving at a tortoise pace but hopefully the government is going to do something here and save those jobs,” he told Sky News. “JobKeeper ends in September. All of the analysis shows this industry is going to hit the wall in October, November and December so it’s not going to be there to save them. “That’s why the government needs to put some money in, put some incentive in, to keep tradies building houses. Otherwise, you’re going to have tradies building a longer line out the back of Centrelink.”
