'The sooner the borders reopen the better' for struggling tourism sector
Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has cautiously called for South Australia’s borders to be reopened sooner rather than later, telling Sky News the struggling tourism sector is desperate for a domestic travel boost. Senator Hanson-Young said the sector - already struggling as a result of the bushfires - needed a lifeline to stay afloat. “Our tourism sector is really, really struggling. It was hit because of the fires over the summer … and our state really needs tourism in order to keep the economy ticking over,” she told Sky News. “As the health advice continues to look at how restrictions can be lifted, I would like the see the state open up as soon as it is safe to do so. “The sooner we can open up our state borders safely the better. I can’t imagine that Steven Marshall is just sitting there trying to pick a date for no reason. I’m sure he’s listening, I hope he’s listening.” Her comments follow calls from SA’s tourism sector for the federal government to use the $60 billion underspend on the JobKeeper program to help tourism operators survive the coronavirus crisis.
