Pompeo warns Australia over Belt and Road deal
United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned Australia that the US is prepared to disconnect from Australia if Victoria’s deal with China under the Belt and Road initiative negatively impacts their telecommunications. The Victorian government has been criticized for refusing to release federal advice about their economic partnership with China. Vic Premier Daniel Andrews defended the deal saying “it is all about Victorian jobs” and he would continue to work with China to assist the state’s economy. The US ambassador to Australia issued a statement following Secretary Pompeo’s comments which said the nation was confident in Victoria’s decision to uphold the relationship and it would be able to protect its telecommunication networks.
