‘Serious repercussions’ for retaliating against China
Former Pentagon advisor Jason Israel says “pretty much” all proposals to hold China accountable for the COVID-19 outbreak – including suing the country and deepening the US trade war – would have “serious repercussions”. “President Trump has talked about possibly trying to raise a trillion dollars in tariffs by upping the trade war to make China pay,” Mr Israel said. “But remember that importers actually pay the cost of tariffs. “The other is suing China. “Since 1976, the US has had legislation called the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act that prevents the US from suing foreign governments. “The main reason is because we don’t want to open it up to retaliatory court action from other countries.” Mr Israel said “brazen” talk of holding China accountable ahead of the US election has next to no downside, politically speaking, but questioned what form the retaliation would take, pointing out Australia’s push for a global inquiry into the origin triggered deepening diplomatic tensions.
