Labor's Kristy McBain ‘best’ Eden-Monaro replacement: Albanese
Labor Leader Anthony Albanese says it’s “very clear” Bega Valley Mayor Kristy McBain is the “best candidate” to replace Mike Kelly in the federal seat of Eden-Monaro at the by-election. In a Canberra media conference, the two stood side-by-side where Mr Albanese said “I’m very pleased that Kristy has agreed to nominate for Labor pre-selection”. “Nominations will close next Monday, but I’m very confident that Kristy will receive the support of locals as well as the support of Labor people who she knows,” he said. He said she was someone who “understands that the people of Eden-Monaro have suffered from drought, then from bushfires then from the coronvirus”. On Thursday, Mr Kelly announced his decision to step down as the electorate’s Labor MP for health reasons. Ms McBain promoted her experience in the area, saying “I don’t want my community to be left behind, and at the moment my community is being left behind”. “My community, specifically, has had three bushfires in two years,” she said. “The whole of Eden-Monaro is drought declared, or should be drought declared, but it’s not. “We’re now in COVID-19. “With these three disasters happening concurrently, we do not and are not receiving the support we need.” Image: Twitter / @AlboMP
